Our View:

This is one of the most historic and well known wine producers in the world. Brunello di Montalcino is made by only ~250 winemakers within the boundaries of Montalcino and all started from Ferrucio Biondi-Santi who created the wine in the late 1800's. 

This highly regarded wine is one for every wine lover's collection and is ready to drink now for those who want to enjoy it immediately and will also age beyond 2030. Many regard Biondi-Santi wines as the best in Montalcino and who can argue with that. 

The Wine:

The prestige of The Greppo estate dates back to the 19th Century, with the great wine culture of the family that owned this Estate, whose terroir has an extraordinary vocation for Sangiovese. Clemente began making wine using 100% Sangiovese and passed his wine knowledge to his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi, who, in 1888 produced the first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino.

This 150 hectare property has 26 hectares of vineyard split over three sites. The oldest of these plots is Il Greppo, laying at 500 metres above sea level; this is where the winery and house are situated. They also have vines down the hill to the east of Montalcino and to the north, close to Montosoli. Vineyards between 10 and 25 years of age are used for the Brunello. The vines are planted in soils characterised by heavy stone and marl, which helps reduce vigour and aid concentration of flavour in the grapes. 

From the second half of July until the end of September the weather was warm and stable with considerable diurnal range which contributed to the development of an intense aromatic profile in the grapes. The harvest started in late September and fermentation was carried out on the skins for two weeks in concrete tanks at controlled temperatures not exceeding 30ºC. After vinification, the wine was aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 36 months. It also spent time in bottle before release.

Tasting Note:

In the glass, this wine has an intense ruby red colour. It opens with a graceful nose focusing on citrus peel with nuances of withered rose, spice and fresh red fruits. Balanced and delicate, on the palate, it delights with cherry flavours and red berry notes. Structured tannins and depth continue through to a long finish.

"This is the year dottore Franco Biondi Santi would pass away, leaving the Brunello appellation orphaned because he was its most beloved and respected paternal figure. A wine shaped very much in his memory, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a stunning edition, with a tight inner core of wild fruit and natural acidity surrounded by elegant tones of blue flower, wild cherry, cured tobacco, balsam herb and camphor ash. This vintage displays a beautiful garnet color that shines in the glass followed by mid-weight concentration and an especially fresh and vibrant finish that lasts for many long minutes. "Due to the late start and generally cool conditions in 2013, harvest began at the end of September at Biondi-Santi, just slightly later than the average. The wine has been held back over a year longer than the denomination regulations and released in March 2019. Still embryonic and reserved, dark floral scents of violet and lilac gradually emerge before notes of sage and thyme take over. The tangy acidity of the vintage comes through brilliantly, amplifying layers of fine, chalky tannins. For now, nuances of rosehip, mint and wild red currants are deeply buried, hinted at only on the finish. It's difficult to forget that this was the year that we lost the legendary Franco Biondi-Santi". February 2019, Michaela Morris
