Gaja Ca’Marcanda Magari 2016, Bolgheri, Italy

Our View:

The history of innovation in wine production that lies behind the Gaja name is legendary in the industry. Family owned and first founded in 1859 with the Gaja Winery in Barbaresco, the Gaja family have been growing vines and making wine for five generations.

From the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in the hallowed soils of Piedmont to the unheard of blending of Barbera grapes with Nebbiolo, Angelo Gaja has consistently challenged the Italian wine making tradition and mindset, with, most importantly, superb results.

We are proud to stock the excellent wines of the Gaja estate in Ca’Marcanda, Tuscany,  produced from non-indigenous internationally renowned varieties and demonstrating that there is so much more to this wonderful region than Sangiovese, wonderful as it can be! The Ca'Marcanda range which means the 'house of endless negotiations' is so called following the 18 trips required to finalise the acquisition of this 100ha Bolgheri estate.

Magari is a brilliant example and a must try for Italian wine lovers.

The Wine:

Magari means if only it were true!, an expression used often in Italian to express desire, hope, and a vision of a bright future. The 2016 is a fulfilling vintage. Embracing, structured, voluptuous, and lively.

Magari’s international and widely appealing grape varietals offer a fresh approach to Italian wines and a lushness that is attractive to a broader wine drinker.

Grapes were grown in Bolgheri, both on dark soil rich in lime and clay, and white soil full of limestone, clay and stones. Separate fermentation for the three varieties, of around 15 days. After 12 months of ageing in oak, they are blended and then aged for several months in the bottle before release.

Tasting Note:

Bright and deep color. The 2016 Magari shows a complex character without being brash. The nose is rich and concentrated, it starts fresh to then develop balsamic notes, and scents of graphite, juniper and liquorice. Then it turns into a more mellow character with dark fruit and rhubarb. The palate is sweet and voluminous, with notes of mulberry and sour cherry. Fine-grained, silky tannins. Long-lasting, sapid final.

What the critics say:

The 60/30/10 blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot in the 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Magari produces an expressive and opulent red wine, with great acidity and definition. The wine is firm and tightly wound, with secondary complexity that expresses itself in terms of tar, leather and spice. The tannins are supple and soft. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 95 points
Blackcurrant and black cherry fruit mingles with mint, olive, graphite and tobacco notes in this red. Elegant, with ample density and bright acidity, ending in a firm, fruit-, mineral- and herb-tinged aftertaste. Well-proportioned and classy. Cabernet Franc blend. Best from 2020 through 2030. Wine Spectator - 94 points
The 2016 Magari is a brilliant wine and is packed with dark, ripe, sexy fruit. Smoking good notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, crushed flowers, graphite, and new saddle leather all flow to a full-bodied, opulently textured red that has good acidity, fabulous concentration, and a great finish. The tannins build with time in the glass, and this is a seriously impressive wine that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age (it's far from unapproachable now) and cruise for a decade or more. Jeb Dunnuck - 94 points
A very fresh nose with tons of dark fruit, such as brambleberries, blueberries and dark cherries, as well as vanilla, dried herbs and eucalyptus. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a tight finish. James Suckling - 93 points
