Our View:

The 2015 vintage in Barolo was excellent and this example from Massolino is no exception. Their pedigree in Piemonte is well known and this is a wine to enjoy. 2015 in Barolo can't be better summed up than as James Suckling (jamessuckling.com) states below:

"The full capability of the Nebbiolo grape’s expressive nature is alive in Barolo 2015 and it is a vintage to really celebrate. In general, the wines are exuberantly fragrant and show fresh clear fruit on the nose with abundant aromatic complexity. Structurally they are rich in ripe, fine and powerful tannins. They are toned, muscular and athletic, coupled with freshness, a keen sense of focus, great length, and an astute balance.

These wines also have the great fortune of offering instant appeal as well as more in-depth attraction, which is the hallmark of a truly great vintage. These wines will satisfy both the experienced palate and educated connoisseur...But if there was one attribute to single out, it is the way in which these wines combine power with elegance. They are thrilling to taste".

The Wine:

This 23 hectare estate has been in the Massolino family since 1896. Winemaker Franco Massolino has done a wonderful job of marrying change with a respect for tradition, something that sets him apart from most of the younger producers in Barolo today. This is in part dictated by the nature of the vineyards that the Massolino family owns in the commune of Serralunga d'Alba - the source of some of the greatest, most structured, robust and long-lived Barolo wines.

Fruit for the Barolo was sourced from grapes grown in several vineyard sites in Serralunga d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto, situated at an altitude of 320-360 metres above sea level. The soil is composed predominantly of limestone and the vines range in age from 10-55 years old.

The wine was matured in large oak casks for 30 months followed by a year in bottle before release.

Tasting Note:

This wine has a bright ruby-garnet colour and has intense perfumes of dark fruit and a touch of cloves with a savoury, herbal note. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet elegant, with plenty of robust but ripe tannins supporting the dark, dried plum and autumn compote fruit character and balancing the acidity. The finish is long and fine, with perfumes of roses and violets. (Vegan & Vegetarian).

What the critics say:

“Lean, yet evocative of cherry, strawberry, earth and tobacco notes, this red is tightly wound, featuring a good dose of bracing acidity, with firm, dusty tannins. Starts out better than it finishes, but remains solid. Best from 2022 through 2040.”

90 Points - Wine Spectator - 2020.

“This is the bread-and-butter wine for the folks at Massolino, and great care is taken to make sure they get it right year after year. The 2015 Barolo is almost all fruit from Serralunga d’Alba (this township makes up 99% of the blend), with a tiny part from Castiglione Falletto. Fruit comes from five vineyard sites, including Briccolina, Collaretto, Broglio and Le Turne, all in Serralunga d’Alba. The tiny part of Castiglione Falletto fruit comes from the Parussi cru. The complex nature of the blend represents old-school Barolo tradition, and it works beautifully in a warm vintage such as this. (That Serralunga d’Alba’s rich marlstone soil keeps the moisture of the vintage locked within.) This is a full and exuberant expression with a well-defined profile of spice, rusty nail, potting soil and truffle. Overall, this vintage is accessible, soft and delicious from the start.”

93 Points - Robert Parker - Wine Advocate 2020

"Very fresh and attractive Barolo with abundant red cherries and a wealth of sweet, rose-petal aromas, too. The palate has a very plush, fleshy and juicy core of fruit in the red-cherry zone. The tannins are velvety and long. One of the more approachable 2015s. Drink or hold".

93 Points - James Suckling - Dec 2019
