Our View:

This is one of the most historic and well known wine producers in the world. Brunello di Montalcino is made by only ~250 winemakers within the boundaries of Montalcino and all started from Ferrucio Biondi-Santi who created the wine in the late 1800's.

The Rosso di Montalcino is a wine ready to drink now, being young and fruity. It has quite an intense ruby red colour and with 12 months ageing is an easy and pleasurable wine to drink.

The Wine:

The prestige of The Greppo estate dates back to the 19th Century, with the great wine culture of the family that owned this Estate, whose terroir has an extraordinary vocation for Sangiovese. Clemente began making wine using 100% Sangiovese and passed his wine knowledge to his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi, who, in 1888 produced the first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino.

This 150 hectare property has 26 hectares of vineyard split over three sites. The oldest of these plots is Il Greppo, laying at 500 metres above sea level; this is where the winery and house are situated. They also have vines down the hill to the east of Montalcino and to the north, close to Montosoli. Vineyards between 5 and 10 years of age are used for the Rosso.

The 2017 Rosso di Montalcino was aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 12 months.

Tasting Note:

The 2017 is bright ruby red in colour with an intensely fragrant bouquet, characterised by notes of black cherries, pomegranate and blackcurrant, intertwined by aromatic sensations of Mediterranean scrub and sweet spices. The palate shows an impressive structure with textured and soothing tannins, accompanied by the typical Biondi-Santi freshness. The finish is characterized by persistent, sweet fruity notes.

What the critics say:

 92 Points - Vinous:

"There’s a purity and savory refinement to the 2017 Rosso di Montalcino Tenuta Greppo that transcends the expectations of this warm and dry vintage. A perfumed display of wild strawberries, fresh roses, violets and a dusting of minerals lift up from the glass. Its textures are silky, carried across a feminine frame, with bright cherries and inner herbal tones that find vibrancy through a core of brilliant acidity. Nuanced tannins and dried berries linger, leaving a lightly structured yet very pretty impression. This is a great introduction to the Biondi-Santi portfolio and deserves the moniker of “Baby Brunello''. That said, the 2017 could use another year of cellaring to further unlock its inner beauty".
