The Wine:

The Henschke family have been making wine at their estate in the Eden Valley since 1868. Fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke took over running the winery in 1979 and together with his viticulturist wife Prue, they continue more than 150 years of winemaking history of some of Australia's most sought after wines.

Keyneton Euphonium is a beautiful composition of Shiraz from up to 50-year-old vines growing in the Eden and Barossa Valleys, blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from selected vineyards in both regions; some of which were planted by Cyril Henschke at his Eden Valley property in the 1960s.

The Barossa hills village of Keyneton, pioneered by pastoralist Joseph Keynes in 1842, was a musical and cultural focus for the early settlers, and was home to the Henschke Family Brass Band, founded in 1888. It is from this history that this wonderful red wine takes it's cue - the brass band featured wonderful wind instruments including a B flat euphonium, a large brass wind instrument, which has been lovingly restored and remains in the Henschke family.

A traditionally wet winter, mild spring and excellent fruit set provided a great start to the 2015 growing season. The weather in spring was dry, followed by a very mild, dry summer where fruit developed higher natural acidity and incredible flavour and colour concentration.

The mild weather from February provided for perfect ripening and harvest conditions with picking taking place between 18th February and 15th April.

After fermentation was complete, the wine was aged in French oak hogsheads (of which 20% were new) for 18 months before blending and bottling.

Tasting Note:

Deep crimson with garnet hues, this wine is enticing on the nose, with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and cassis, enveloped by herbal notes of sage and bay leaf that lead to subtle nuances of red fruits, black pepper, vanilla and cedar. The generous palate offers rich flavours of red and blackcurrant, dried herbs and black pepper, with great purity, balance and texture forming a delicious mouthfeel, while velvety tannins provide great length and complexity.

What the critics say:

"This vintage of Henschke's Shiraz dominant red blend (with includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Cab Franc) is ones of its most approachable. Still showing off an air of aristocratic polish, it is highly herbal and a little sanguine, with notes of baked plum, tomato leaf, beef in hoisin sauce and stony minerals. Silky in texture, tannins are spicy and sexy, slinking along a spine of laser-like acidity and ending on a long, herbal note. Drink now–2030."

“…gently inviting nose displaying notes of hay as well as sweet ripe red fruit. On the palate…both warming and held together with firm tannins, which is everything we could want in a Barossa Shiraz…Although juicy red and blackcurrant were a big feature, but supported by herbal flavours of mint, dried grass, and even a touch of meat. …With its herbal notes, high acidity, enveloping tannins, and generous mouthfeel, this is a perfect wine for cold weather and red meat…”

Gold – The Syrah Masters 2019 - Edith Hancock The Drinks Business 2020

"Rich plum and plum-cake aromas with redder tones, too. Some dried-herb undertones. A ripe and rich style with plush and very rich, enveloping tannins that carry a very supple array of blackberries and plums. A blend of 66% shiraz, 19% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Drink or hold."
