Loveblock Pinot Noir 2016, Central Otago, New Zealand
A highly regarded wine from renowned producers Kim and Erica Crawford. This is a fruit driven Pinot Noir, with savoury and floral notes adding interesting levels of complexity. Drinking well now but will mature in bottle over the coming years.
An excellent and versatile wine that can be enjoyed alone or with a wide range of foods.
Perched high on the hills overlooking Marlborough’s Awatere Valley, Loveblock is far removed from the agricultural bustle in the valley below. From here you can almost see the end of the planet; the peace lifts you above your troubles. Loveblock are charged with creating the best wine they can to express this extraordinary place and its unique aspect. Kim and Erica Crawford follow their deeply held belief in low intervention farming which enables the wine to show its true and naked terroir.
These Pinot Noir grapes come from Loveblock’s estate in Bendigo, Central Otago, called Someone’s Darling. This is in the warmer area of this extreme grape growing region and tends to have more robust flavours. The five clones planted here each contribute to the spectrum of perfume and flavour, giving the vibrant, fruit driven profile sought. Extra attention is paid to make sure the wine is not over extracted or over oaked.
Appearance is deep, dark crimson. Big ripe black cherry with smoky notes and hints of mushroom peaking out behind rich fruit on the nose. And on the palate, fleshy black plum with layers of cherry and sweet berries play on the palate, dancing with notes of violet. Food match: Dry tannins and hints of cigar make this a versatile wine to pair with turkey, salmon, lamb and beef.

What the critics say:
“This is intense and muscular without being overdone. Herbal and peppery notes bring nuance to the concentrated flavors of dark plum, mocha and baking spice. The finish is richly tannic but not hard, making it approachable now but capable of aging through 2030”(2014 vintage) Wine Enthusiast 92 points
