Our View:

This is an award winning, elegant wine, from Caves de Sao Joao, a well respected producer in the Bairrada DOC of Portugal. It is well structured, with complex fruit, spice notes and soft tannins all combining well to produce a very drinkable Portuguese red. Possibly at it’s best when served with food, particularly roasted red meats, soft cheeses and game.

This beautiful wine is drinking well today and will mature in bottle for years to come.

The Wine:

This wine is a blend of Baga, Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon, The best grapes, grown on a limestone/loam soil at Quinta do Poco do Lobo estate vineyards were harvested by hand (end September) and after a rigorous selection and destemming, macerated for 2 weeks in a vat with pneumatic treading system. After the malolactic fermentation the wine matured for 12 months in new French oak barrels. It was bottled after a minimal clarification. This wine can create sediment with age.

Tasting Note:

This is a wine intended to be enjoyed with food, it is very elegant, full bodied and fresh with very pleasant astringency. With notes of chocolate, cinnamon, coffee and ripe berries and sloes. Quinta do Poco do Lobo has moderate tannins and a long finish in the mouth.  It should be served at 18C. This wine can be enjoyed now or anytime over the next 20 years.
