Our View:

The name Anaperenna has been inspired by Anna Perenna, the Roman goddess of the New Year. Anna Perenna symbolises the year's cycle and her name translates as 'enduring year'. Romans honoured Anna Perenna with a festival held on the first full moon of the Roman calendar. On March 15th they would ask Anna to grant them longevity, and a healthy year for each glass of wine they drank on that day.

History in the vines, the label and the Glaetzer family combined with expert knowledge in wine-making ensure this Shiraz / Cabernet Sauvignon blend is a real star.

The Wine:

The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley.

All fruit for Glaetzer Wines is taken from the small sub-region of the northern Barossa Valley, called Ebenezer. The very old vines require minimal attention. Their deep root structure means they are self-sufficient and can adapt to climatic extremes.

Glaetzer Anaperenna is a seamless fusion of the two varieties Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Voluptuous, opulent and yet refined, with a very long and satisfying finish. The symbol on the label is the Egyptian Ankh (pronounced: onk). Historically the ankh symbolised sunrise, regeneration, regrowth and renewal.

Exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine age 30—100 year old Shiraz and 30—130 year old Cabernet.

Fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters, hand plunged 3 times daily. Matured for 16 months in 100% new oak hogshead barrels (92% French and 8% American) and matured on lees to maintain fruit profile and animation. Bottled unfiltered to ensure minimal intervention with the wine’s natural characteristics.

Tasting Note:

Dark purple hues frame a depth of black. On the nose - Complex layers of black fruits with a slight herbal lift and notes of anise spice. The palate has hints of dark cherry and dried spice with seamlessly integrated tannin. A wine that will mature extremely well with long term cellaring up to 20 years.

What the critics say:

97 Points - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate:

"For the 2018 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon, Glaetzer blended in 18% Cabernet Sauvignon to give the wine increased fragrance and length. The nose is smoky, slightly herbal and marked by sweet cedar-and vanilla-tinged oak, but it also offers great cassis and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the flavors are kept nicely in check by fine-grained tannins. This wine has it all: terrific intensity, complexity, length and texture". Joe Czerwinski, 2020 Wine Advocate Review, 1st August 2020

96 Points - James Halliday:

"82% shiraz (30-100yo vines), 18% cabernet sauvignon (30-130yo vines) yielding 2.5t/ha, open-fermented, hand-plunged, matured for 16 months in new hogsheads (92% French, 8% American). Full-bodied, plum blackberry, supple tannin, good oak. Easy to argue this is too cheap".
